A Wink and a Smile: The Art of Burlesque is a 2008 documentary about the glamorous world of bump and grind. Miss Indigo Blue of Seattle's Academy of Burlesque narrates the history and little known details of this hidden world. She also teaches a six-week course to a group of ordinary women including a doctor, a student, a reporter and homemaker. Each of the women has their own reasons for joining the class, but as they shape their burlesque personalities and routines, they discover the unexpected power of crafting a sexual identity for unveiling. As they prepare for their first public performance, the women battle their self-conscious attitudes about their naked bodies being on view, but eventually each finds a unique and colorful dance and individually crafted costumes. Director Deirdre Allen Timmons also includes clips of much-admired professional performers and the many forms of this artful undressing that has recently been revived.
