A Woman Under the Influence is a dramatic film directed by John Cassavetes that focuses on housewife Mabel Longhetti (Gena Rowlands) as her apparent psychotic break leaves her family devastated, especially when they are forced to institutionalize her. Though Mabel loves and is dedicated to her husband Nick (Peter Falk) and their three children, her increasingly erratic behavior begins to strain the family, though Nick falters at trying to address his not-so conventional wife. She had always been a bit too loud, her mood's in a quick rollercoaster of surges, and a little too childlike but when Mabel begins to crack under the pressure of being a model wife, mother, and daughter-in-law, Nick has to determine whether or not she's a threat to their kids. A Woman Under the Influence is a harrowing look a woman truly dedicated to her family even as she slowly tumbles out of control and the family who has to watch and prepare for her descent.moreless
