Aces High is a 1976 war drama following Major John Gresham (Micheal McDowell) and Lt. Stephen Croft (Peter Firth) as they handle the struggles of war and personal development. Gresham is a fighter pilot who handles the pressures that war and death brings with alcohol. He receives Lt. Croft as a new pilot, and, as the life expectancy for fresh wings is rather low, Gresham's stress levels increase. Croft looks up to Gresham, believing him a true war hero, and wants to be like him. However, his skills in both the air and on the ground are not up to par, and he must hone his abilities in order to survive. After several mistakes, Croft begins to realize how Gresham handles the stress, but his respect for the man rises, as he sees how difficult the war is. Aces High shows the emotional side of war, and how two men can grow with support and teamwork.
