Across the Pacific reunites director John Huston with his superb "Maltese Falcon" cast in a witty spy adventure, where no one is who they seem. On the verge of the United States joining World War II, Rick Leland (Humphrey Bogart) has been thrown out of the Army for treason. He tries to join the war effort in Canada, but when they refuse him he boards a Japanese freighter bound for Yokohama via the Panama Canal. The ship has a curious selection of passengers including a mysterious professor, Dr. Lorenz (Sydney Greenstreet), a Japanese man visiting the homeland, Joe Totsuiko (Sen Young) and the lovely Alberta Marlow (Mary Astor). While trading barbs with the Lorenz, and romancing Alberta, Leland uncovers the details of a secret Japanese plot to instigate a war with an attack. Produced on the brink of Pearl Harbor, this spy story represents the Hollywood war effort with a pointed story and a polished cast.
