Adam Resurrected

Movie Summary

Director:
Paul Schrader
Released:
2009
Rating:
R

Adam Resurrected tells the story of Jewish circus entertainer Adam Stein (Jeff Goldblum) who survived the Holocaust by serving as a "dog" for Nazi Commandant Klein (Willem Dafoe). While Adam was debased and subjugated for the Nazi's entertainment, his wife and daughters were executed. Years after the war, Adam is a patient at an Israeli mental asylum for Holocaust survivors. Mentally tormented and unable to function outside the institution, he finds another tortured soul in a boy named David (Tudor Rapiteanu), who was so abused and isolated that he now behaves like a feral dog. Adam realizes that his own experience at the hands of the Nazis and his remarkable instincts working with circus animals can help the child and, at the same time, help himself. Adam and David's journey together is the heart of this moving story. Many great films have shown the horrors of concentration camps, but Adam Resurrected presents a powerful and unconventional perspective on this bleak historical period.
