2002
Rating:
PG-13

Adam Sandler's Eight Crazy Nights is an animated musical comedy, co-written and produced by comedy star Adam Sandler, who also lends his voice to four characters. Other star voices for this film include Rob Schneider, Jon Lovitz, Kevin Nealon, and Tyra Banks. Davey Stone (Sandler) is a 33-year old loner, a misfit alcoholic who can't stay out of trouble, especially during Hanukkah. Facing another holiday season in jail, he's saved from the slammer by Whitey Duvall (also Sandler), the head referee for the local basketball league. Whitey, an odd, elf-like man, was Davey's referee years before and convinces the judge to sentence Davey to community service instead, refereeing the league. Davey proves himself completely unfit as a ref, but no matter how bad things go, Whitey won't give up on him. He even invites the homeless Davey to live with him and his sister, Eleanor (also voiced by Sandler) and celebrate the holidays together. Will the spirited old referee, and the eight crazy nights of Hanukkah, be enough to set the perpetual troublemaker straight?

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

On the whole, this lively, bittersweet Columbia release works well and is sure to connect strongly with fans of Sandler at his most free-wheeling and uninhibited. Scrub off the lat...

  • 30

    Variety Scott Foundas

This is a dark, vulgar, brooding turnoff of a movie, minus the steady laugh quotient needed to appease Sandler's core constituency.

  • 10

The New York Times A.O. Scott

Festooned with yards of gross-out jokes, sniggering allusions and, astonishingly, a sentimental climax that's more repellent than any of the crude effluvia the film is drenched with.
