Adaptation is a 2002 film directed by Spike Jonze and written by Charlie Kaufman. The film is about Charlie Kaufman's attempt to adapt a book "The Orchid Thief" by a New Yorker writer, Susan Orlean. Charlie Kaufman chronicles the struggle of trying to adapt the book and ends up placing himself into the story along with a fictional twin brother. Nicolas Cage plays both Charlie and Donald Kaufman in the film. The film was critically acclaimed winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for Chris Cooper, and both Meryl Streep and Nicolas Cage were nominated for Oscars as well. Roger Ebert wrote in his review that "to watch the film is to be actively involved in the challenge of its creation." Charlie Kaufman went on to write the film "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and write and direct the film "Synecdoche, New York."
