Affair of the Necklace is a historical drama film directed by Charles Shyer that focuses on the controversial and mysterious scandal known as the Affair of the Diamond Necklace in the French court of Louis XVI and his wife, Marie Antoinette. Jeanne de Saint-Remy de Valois (Hilary Swank) yearns to regain acclaim and royal title but with each avenue rebuffed, the worst when the Queen Marie Antoinette (Joely Richardson) pays her little mind, Jeanne falls into the scheming plans of a well-connected gigolo Retaux de Villette (Simon Baker) and her womanizing belligerent husband Nicholas(Adrien Brody). The plan concocted by the two men involves false letters between the queen and a debauched Cardinal (Jonathan Pryce) and the selling of a necklace originally made for King Louis XV’s mistress. As Jeanne follows through in this attempt to regain her family home and titles, the machinations implode as the King finds out of the plot and the people begin to think Marie Antoinette did have a role to play in the whole thing, ultimately helping lead to the French Revolution.moreless

Shyer and Sweet bring consistent clarity and ever-increasing depth to the playing out of Jeanne's bold scheming and single-minded resolve; a tone of brisk wit gives way effortlessl...

Drags and meanders when it wants clarity and clockwork, and bogs down in hazy, vague emotions.

A staggeringly misguided stab at making the past come alive by people who have absolutely no feel for period filmmaking. Banal at best and laughable at worst.
