Affliction is a 1998 drama directed by Paul Schrader. Based on a novel of the same name by Russell Banks, the film follows Wade Whitehouse (Nick Nolte), a small town New Hampshire sheriff. Wade is a broken man teetering on the edge of self-destruction. Divorced from his wife, Lillian (Mary Beth Hurt), estranged from his daughter, Jill (Brigid Tierney), and abused by his father, Glen (James Coburn), Wade's last hope of redemption is his work. When Jack Hewitt (Jim True-Frost) is killed in a hunting accident, Wade is convinced there was foul play involved. Jack was to testify in court against developer Gordon LaRiviere (Holmes Osborne). With no direct evidence, Wade begins to harass LaRiviere in an effort to break him. As his campaign against LaRiviere heats up, everyone turns against him. His relationship with his girlfriend, Margie Fogg (Sissy Spacek), falls apart as his obsession and drinking worsen. In the end, his life spins out of control with those around him bearing the consequences.

Metacritic Score

  • 100

    The New York Times

Succeeds in finding something larger than one man's misery. It turns dark truthfulness into the cinematic sentiment most worth celebrating this season.

  • 90

    Los Angeles Times Gene Seymour

Rarely have a novelist and filmmaker been better matched.

  • 60

    Variety Todd McCarthy

The pervasive chill, ugly feelings and downward spiral of the narrative make this a work that requires an equally sober, serious-minded attitude on the part of the viewer.
