Against All Odds is a 1984 crime thriller about an ex-NFL star, Terry Brogan (Jeff Bridges), who is blackmailed into finding Jessie (Rachel Ward), the mistress of a seedy L.A. night club owner, Jake Wise (James Woods). Broke and abruptly cut from his team, Terry seeks out Jake for financial help. He instead uses some of Terry secrets as a means to force Terry to find Jessie and bring her back to L.A. With few other options, Terry complies with Jake's blackmail and tracks Jessie to a small Mexican island. After an initial contentious meeting, the duo soon fall in love and forget about Jake. Unwilling to give up Jessie, Jake sends one of his henchmen, Sully (Alex Karras), to find the lovers. Once back in L.A., Terry soon realizes the extent of Jake's ruthlessness and how far he will go to keep Jessie. Embroiled in a web of gambling, blackmail and murder, Terry knows that he must outsmart Jake to save his life and Jessie's.moreless

If not for a somewhat murky and misanthropic ending, Against All Odds would stand as a well-engineered second-try at 1947's "Out of the Past."
