Agnes Browne is a 1999 dramedy about an Irish widow in the late 1960s. Agnes Browne (Anjelica Huston) has 7 children aged two to 14 years old, when her husband unexpectedly dies. With no other means of support, Agnes must borrow money for the funeral from Mr. Billy (Ray Winstone), a local loan shark who has no sympathy for widows or orphans. She barely makes a living by selling fruits and vegetables in the farmer's market, while trying to scrape up payments for Mr. Billy. One bright spot in the hardworking lives of Agnes and her best friend, Marion Monks (Marion O'Dwyer), is the music of pop singer Tom Jones. When his concert tour brings him to Dublin, they dream about attending but cannot afford the tickets. Pierre (Arno Chevrier), the local baker, hears of her wish, and conspires with her children to arrange a date for the concert. Anjelica Huston also directs this Irish slice-of-life drama about finding good times even under the worst hardships.moreless
