Al Capone is the godfather of mob movies. There have been multiple stories about this famous gangster, but this 1950s rendition was one of the first and still retains its standing as a classic in the field. This factual biography in black and white follows Al Capone (Rod Steiger) through the days of prohibition and his rise in organized crime. Starting as a nobody bodyguard for a mobster, Capone becomes a hardened criminal and through a series of deaths, well-done jobs, and resignations of fear from his superiors, eventually arrives at the top, though the film does not glamorize his lifestyle or personality. Prohibition makes this man rich, though his power is tenuous as shown by the fall of those above him. Willful, wavering, lecherous, and demanding is how Capone is played in this film, though he does pursue a love interest - the widow of a cop he once killed. Can she put up with his affectations, and more importantly, will she find out who he really is? The film covers, but does not glamorize his well-known fall and the failure of the American justice system against him as he is indicted on tax evasion, an almost laughable offense after the horrors he has committed.moreless
