Alexander The Great is an epic 1956 historical drama about the life of Macadonian hero, Alexander the Great (Richard Burton). The story begins by introducing us to a young Alexander the Great before he became great. Alexander has a tumultuous relationship with his strict, domineering father, Philip of Macadonia (Fredric March), and struggles to find his own way despite the expectations his mother, Olympias (Danielle Darrieux) has placed upon him. His teacher, Aristotle (Barry Jones), has even greater aspirations for Alexander and is determined to see Alexander fulfill his destiny. As an adult, Alexander the Great surpasses both his and his family's expectations as he becomes the king who unites all the tribes of Greece against Persia. The epic battle taking place on the battlefield is not the only major conflict for Alexander; he must also come to terms with his own mortality and his humanity if he is to survive.moreless
