Movie Summary

Charles Shyer
Alfie is a 2004 movie starring Jude Law as the title character, a remake of the 1966 film where Michael Caine played the role. Alfie is a limo driver in Manhattan who cycles through women carelessly, liaising for sex occasionally but moving on as soon as they seem like they might get attached. These habits are unknown to single mother Julie (Marisa Tomei) his “semi-regular-quasi-sort-of-girlfriend thing.â€? Alfie’s best friend and coworker Marlon (Omar Epps) has girl troubles of his own as he is trying to get back together with his ex Lonette (Nia Long), and asks smooth talking Alfie to put in a good word with her. Instead, the two end up sleeping together and Alfie can’t believe how he’s betrayed his best friend. Around the same time, Julie breaks up with him after discovering one of his mistresses’ panties as proof of his infidelity. Lonette ends up pregnant by Alfie, and they go to the abortion clinic. Shortly thereafter, Lonette and Marlon move away together without even saying goodbye. On top of his loneliness, Alfie develops erectile dysfunction that embarrasses him in front of his next few conquests, but when he goes to a doctor he learns that it could be due to a much more serious problem. Alfie realizes he has no one and looks at his life in a new way- it might be time for him to change his ways. Unfortunately for Alfie, he may have made that discovery far too late.moreless
