Algiers is a 1938 drama directed by John Cromwell. In the very heart of Algeria, Pepe Le Moko (Charles Boyer) has become a kind of makeshift ruler. The charismatic and clever jewel thief has turned to the labyrinthine and complicated streets of Algiers as a refuge from the French authorities, who are still trying to catch Pepe for his massive jewel heist. He uses his cunning and commanding personality to make a good life for himself in the mysterious Cabash, or native quarter, of the city. Pepe enjoys the affections of beautiful Agerian Ines (Sigrid Gurie). All the same, Pepe is a patriot at heart, and the knowledge that he cannot safely return to France begins to tug at his heart. His poignant yearning for his homeland is only made worse by the appearance of Gaby (Hedy Lamarr), a lovely and sophisticated French tourist who brings plenty of Gallic charm with her. Faced with Ines's jealousy, Pepe begins to make plans to return to France, but he suspects that the ruthless Inspector Slimane (Joseph Calleia) lies in wait for him.moreless
