Ali Zaoua: King of the Streets is a richly realized and bittersweet 2000 drama by director Nabil Ayouch. Ali (Abdelhak Zhayra) lives on the streets of Casablanca, banding together with fellow homeless boys and struggling to stay safe, clothed and fed in an often harsh and unforgiving environment. Ali and his friends Kwita (Maunim Kbab), Boubker (Hicham Moussaune) and Omar (Mustapha Hansali) have a close connection with each other and become a makeshift family, finding friendship and happiness even in their harsh circumstances. All four of the boys are outcasts from a gang of young, desperate criminals, run by the ruthless Dib (Said Taghmaoui). Ali, Omar, Kwita and Boubker prefer independence and would rather live by their own rules than bow to Dib's tyranny. The boys' lives on the streets are suddenly interrupted by a devastating act of violence that none of them could have expected. It is only through courage and optimism that they are able continue on with their difficult but heartwarming friendship.moreless
