Ali is a 2006 biographical drama starring Will Smith as the legendary boxer and American icon Muhammad Ali. The film begins when he was known as Cassius Clay (Will Smith), winner of the Olympic gold medal. The outspoken boxer presented a new and bold image for African Americans at the time, brimming with confidence and eloquence. He quickly captures the heavyweight title and charms sports fans with his charismatic personality, but his friendship with political leader Malcolm X (Mario Van Peebles) and association with the controversial Temple of Islam begins to sway opinion against him. He changes his name to Muhammad Ali. In spite of being at the top of his professional game, the military draft for the Vietnam War puts his life in turmoil. Director Michael Mann portrays the many aspects of Ali's larger-than-life existence with romantic complications, religious dedication and political beliefs all pulling at the gifted athlete. The star-studded cast includes Jon Voight as Howard Cosell and Jamie Foxx as Drew 'Bundini' Brown, Ali's longtime corner man.moreless
