Alice's Restaurant is a 1969 film adaptation of the classic story song by Arlo Guthrie. It was directed by Arthur Penn. The film follows Arlo Guthrie as he goes to see Alice on Thanksgiving. As a favor for her he takes Alice's garbage to the dump. However when he gets to the dump he finds that it is closed. So he just dumps his trash onto another pile of garbage way at the bottom of a ravine. The local sherriff finds out about this infraction and begins a major manhunt to try to track Arlo down. Arlo goes to court over this and ends up being inducted into the Vietnam war. The film dealt with important themes of the sixties such as hippies vs. bureaucrats and the dark side of drug use. Today it exists as an interesting time capsule into what was a very turbulent time.
