All Over the Town is a British film from 1949 that revolves around Nat Hearn (Norman Wooland) who returns home from the war to his job as an ace reporter for the local paper. The town is happy for his return but the owners of the paper, Gerald (Cyril Cusack) and son Sam (Ronald Adam), are not happy to resume paying Nat's paycheck. When Gerald suffers a heart attack and dies, Sam realizes that the newspaper is in dire financial trouble. Sam looks to Nat for a loan and to sweeten the deal, he makes Nat the head editor. Soon, Sam becomes disturbed by the commentary that Nat is publishing in the newspaper. Nat is undercutting some of the major supporters of the paper by writing about the labor movement and asking for better treatment for soldiers who return from war. Half social commentary and half-light hearted comedy, this film is a fine tribute to the hard times people endured during World War II.moreless
