Almos' A Man is a portrayal of a young man's trial of coming to age in an environment destined to break his spirit during the 1930's. Dave (Levar Burton) is tired of plowing the hard ground and receiving no respect from his elders. He is a black youth who must not only deal with his personal struggle of adolescence, but also that of a racist environment. Dave decides that to become a man, he needs to have a gun. After getting a gun, circumstances backfire on Dave, because he lacks the maturity to handle certain situations. Dave anticipates firing the first shot, but the gun is too powerful for him and misfires, causing an unfortunate accident. During the aftermath, Dave must make a choice as to which path into manhood he is going to take. Although the situation is unique because of the racial implications, there is still much that can be learned from the struggles Dave goes through, regardless of time period, race, or sex.moreless
