Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, directed by Betty Thomas, is the sequel to the 2007 film "Alvin and the Chipmunks" directed by Tim Hill and starring Jason Lee and David Cross. While the Chipmunks are performing in Paris, their manager David Seville (Jason Lee) is injured in a bizarre and hilarious accident which lands him in the hospital leaving the chipmunks to be cared for by his Aunt Jackie (Kathryn Joosten) who arranges for the chipmunks to attend school. After Aunt Jackie is hospitalized after falling down some stairs and getting clobbered by a luggage cart, the chipmunks ultimately wind up in the care of Dave's nephew, Toby (Zachary Levi). Even though the Chipmunks are world famous super stars, they decide to try and win $25,000 in a battle of the bands contest so they can save the school's music program. Ian Hawke (David Cross) is the bad guy who tries to thwart their efforts by entering the Chipettes (a female chipmunk musical act) into the contest to win the money for himself.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Betsy Sharkey

Perhaps not since "The Godfather: Part II" have we seen a sequel come along that more than matches the mastery of the film that came before it -- all the pathos, the brio, the epic...

    Variety Joe Leydon

A frenetic but undeniably funny follow-up that offers twice the number of singing-and-dancing rodents in another seamless blend of CGI and live-action elements.

The New York Times Neil Genzlinger

The earlier "Alvin" movie made more than $217 million just in the United States. It's hard to imagine this somewhat confused sequel doing as well.
