Alvin and the Chipmunks is a 2007 fantastical family comedy by director Tim Hill, starring Jason Lee, David Cross, Cameron Richardson, Jane Lynch, and the voices of Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler, and Jesse McCartney. In the film, a group of mischievous, fun-loving talkingâand singingâchipmunks, Alvin (voice of Justin Long), Simon (voice of Matthew Gray Gubler), and Theodore (voice of Jesse McCartney), find themselves in the home of struggling songwriter Dave Seville (Jason Lee), when the tree they reside in is cut down and shipped to Los Angeles, California, for use as a Christmas tree. Although they fail at first impressions, pretty much wrecking Daveâs house, their singing prowess wins him over and they become the performers of his songs. But when a money-hungry record executive, Ian (David Cross), steps into the picture the fun family-like relations of the chipmunks with Dave become strained. Alvin and the Chipmunks received great critical acclaim, winning a 2008 BMI Film Music Award and a 2008 Blimp Award, as well as a nomination for a 2008 Young Artist Award.

    Los Angeles Times

There is sweetness here. The scene in which Dave and the boys decorate the tree is charming, and the Chipmunks' excited presentation of gifts to their human dad is actually sort of...

A harmless and frequently humorous trifle.

Despite its shout-outs to the holiday season, this is essentially airplane fodder, not a perennial. Don't hold your breath waiting for the sequel.
