Amazon: IMAX takes viewers inside the Amazon River Basin, one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world. Academy Award winner Linda Hunt narrates the journey of American scientist Dr. Mark Plotkin and tribal shaman Julio Mamani as they search for the medicinal plants used by the native tribes. The Amazon River Basin in South America includes more than 2 million square miles, much of which remains unexplored, but industrial development is invading the area at an alarming rate. Plotkin is one of the founding members of the Amazon Conservation Team, founded in 1995 to protect the rainforest and the indigenous peoples living there. With so much of the area unexplored, Plotkin argues that Western science has much it can learn by studying the unique ecosystem and that the rainforest may hold the key to curing diseases that plague the world. Director Keith Merrill uses IMAX technology to provide stunning visuals of this rarely seen tropical landscape in the 1997 documentary.moreless
