America takes an insightful and emotional look into the foster care system in this 2009 Lifetime movie, directed by Yves Simoneau. Young America (Philip Johnson) is a product of the foster care system. Taken away from his crack-addicted mother as an infant, America has been moved around to different foster families. Apart from one kind caretaker, Mrs. Harper (Ruby Dee), he has known little warmth in his young life. Although his mother makes an attempt to reunite with her son, she eventually abandons him again and he returns to the system, more antisocial than ever. After a suicide attempt, he is placed in the care of psychiatrist Dr. Maureen Brennan (Rosie O'Donnell) in a youth treatment center. Dr. Brennan helps release America from his isolation and face the painful episodes of his past, such as the sexual and physical abuse he has suffered, and find the support he needs to move beyond his pain.
