American Anthem is an American sports drama movie by director Albert Magnoli. In the movie, Steve Tevere (Mitch Gaylord) is a talented gymnast who has left his career as a competitive athlete behind to work at his father’s bicycle shop. When Julie Lloyd (Janet Jones), a beautiful new girl in town, starts at his old gym in order to train with his old coach, however, Steve reconsiders his decision. For a while he is torn, but then he ultimately decides to return to gymnastics and this time go all out in his ambitions, with no reservations and nothing but the ultimate goal in mind. Now he trains, together with Julie, for the US Olympic Trials. The conflicts in his personal life, however, are still there and are only exacerbated by the high-stress training environment. American Anthem was nominated for a 1987 Razzie Award for Mitch Gaylord’s performance as Steve Tevere.
