American Empire is a 1942 Western that tells a story of entrepreneurship, friendship, and betrayal. Paxton Bryce (Preston Foster) has his eye on some unclaimed cattle wandering through the open land on the Texas countryside. Brash and impulsive, he decides to set up a ranch and cattle business. He convinces his friend Dan Taylor (Richard Dix) to join him. Taylor is a more stable and cautious type, and though he knows his friend for the reckless personality that he is, he sees the opportunity. The two of them strike gold. As their growing empire takes off, Paxton begins to extend himself beyond his means, and his stress and exhaustion get the best of him. He pushes away his wife and his friends, and Dan can only barely tolerate him. When Dominique Beauchard (Leo Carrillo) sees an underhanded opportunity in the fields of claimed cattle, he gathers his henchmen together to take what they can under cover of darkness. Paxton begins to realize that he has lost the friends that he needed to fend off the rustlers.moreless
