American Friends is a charming comedy about an Oxford professor who finds himself in a love triangle with two women he meets on vacation. On a trip to Switzerland in 1861, Francis Ashby, (Michael Palin) an English professor at Oxford University, meets two intriguing woman from America, Caroline (Connie Booth), and her niece Elinor (Trini Alvarado), who she has adopted. Ashby, a proud bachelor, finds himself taken with 18 year old Elinor, but decides not to act on his impulses, as a scandal could interrupt his plan of becoming the next president of the college. However, when he returns to Oxford, Ashby finds his problems smack dab in his face, as the two women come to visit, with a persistent Caroline vying for his hand in marriage. Trying to keep any controversial news from the watchful eye of Oliver Syme (Alfred Molina), his competition for the job, Ashby does his very best to appease both women, while at the same time pursuing the one he would like to be with. Tristram Powell directs this light hearted, comedic film, penned by Palin, who based much of the story on the life of his great grandfather.moreless
