American Fusion, the 2005 romantic comedy written and directed by Frank Lin, follows a divorced middle-aged woman looking for happiness and love and the hardships that her search creates. The woman is Yvonne (Sylvia Chang), a Chinese immigrant nearing her fiftieth birthday and life is not going as well for her as she had hoped. She is stuck in a dead-end job, working for a low-level newspaper, which is more focused on ad revenue than journalism. At home she has to contend with her overbearing mother (Lang Yun) as well as her unmotivated son Josh (Randall Park). However, when working on a piece for the paper, a thunderbolt enters Yvonne's life when she meets Jose (Esai Morales), a successful Mexican-American dentist. Soon they start dating and romance begins to blossom. As the romance starts to get serious, complications arise. For one, Yvonne's mother, a strict traditional Chinese woman, is absolutely mortified at the prospects of her daughter marrying a Mexican man. Yvonne's mother is also going in for back surgery, thus assuring that she would be an even larger presence in Yvonne's life for the near future. Can cultural fences and racial biases be overcome in the name of love?
