American Gangster is the 2007 gangster epic that chronicles the true to life rise and fall of a crime legend, directed by world class filmmaker Ridley Scott (Gladiator, Hannibal, Thelma and Louise, Robin Hood, Kingdom of Heaven). Due to the death of one of New York's most successful drug dealers, a void is in the city for someone to become New York's most powerful gangster. This leads to the dealer's assistant Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) deciding that he does not want to be one of the two-a-penny dealers in 1970s New York. Instead, he wants to rule a business empire, which he begins by going to Asia himself and cutting out the middleman by buying his own supply of heroin. Due to making sure that it is 100% pure, he is able to sell the drugs cheaper than anyone else and become the most successful gangster in town. Lucas becomes so powerful, that he is able to bribe everyone from cops to people on the street, and whilst Lucas is living the high life, undercover police officer Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) despite almost everyone against him, is doing everything he can to find out who is cutting the drugs.moreless
