American History X is a 1998 American film that tells the story of Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton) and brother Danny Vinyard (Edward Furlong). After a black drug dealer in the South Central neighborhood of Los Angeles murders their firefighter father, Derek becomes entangled with the neo-Nazi movement. When Derek kills two black gang members attempting to steal his truck, he is sentenced to three years in prison. While Derek is in jail, younger brother Danny begins to follow in his footsteps. When Derek is released from prison, he does everything he can to stop Danny from making mistakes that will put him in prison. Danny becomes obsessed with Adolf Hitler and has a run-in with a black student at school. Unfortunately, by the time Derek gets out of prison, it is too late to help Danny. Also starring Beverly D'Angelo, Fairuza Balk, Steacy Keach, Jennifer Lien, and Ethan Suplee, American History X earned Edward Norton an Academy Award nomination.
