American Meth investigates the grassroots-level devastation of methamphetamine use in the western United States. Since 2007, American Meth has won several awards including the 2011 National Media Award. Methamphetamine is clinically recognized as the most destructive illicit drug available. Approximately 95% of meth users who quit will relapse, compared to the 20% of crack cocaine and heroin users who return to drug use. There are an estimated 1.5 million meth users in the United States and addicts refer to it as "the devil's serum". The drug has single-handedly dismantled entire families and communities. Methamphetamine has infiltrated rural communities as well as large cities and entire towns have become addicted to the drug. American Meth travels to blue-collar communities including Portland, Oregon, and Roswell, New Mexico, to meet the addicts, police officers, politicians, health providers and social workers dealing with the epidemic. The film also features the personal journeys of two meth addicts, James and Holly.
