American Psycho is a 2000 black comedy-thriller starring Christian Bale in a story about materialistic yuppies living in 1980s Manhattan, and one man who leads a double life-successful Wall Street investment banker by day, deranged rapist and serial killer by night. Bale plays Patrick Bateman, a wealthy man at the beginning of a successful career who sees everything around him with a price tag attached. He obsessively maintains his chiseled body and keeps his apartment stocked with trendy liquor and furniture. He wears suits of the highest quality and patronizes the most-talked about restaurants and clubs. However, behind the veneer of this well-dressed man is a disturbed killer who feels no kinship with or understanding of the people around him. Willem Dafoe plays Donald Kimball, a private investigator hired to find the man responsible for one of Bateman's many murders. Other stars who appear in the film include Reese Witherspoon, Chloe Sevigny, and Jared Leto. American Psycho is a violent, funny, and scathing social commentary, based on the acclaimed novel of the same name from author Bret Easton Ellis.
