American Scary is a 2006 documentary film directed by John E. Hudgens. American Scary focuses on America's long standing tradition of horror hosting and takes a look at unique hosts such as A. Ghastlee Ghoul, Zacherley, Svengoolie, Ghoulardi, Vampira and Elvira. These types of scary-fun television horror movie hosts were once hugely popular and were a staple of television productions, especially local TV. As cheaper syndicated programming became available and production demands changed the local television business model, TV horror hosts were phased out, no matter how popular they were with fans. American Scary takes a deep look at this bizarre folk art of horror hosting from its glamorous beginnings, through repeated waves of popularity, all the way up to its resurgent popularity and current survival in the age of cable access television and the Internet. American Scary features candid interviews with the most well-known horror hosts as well as the celebrities and television personalities that they influenced and inspired.
