AmericanEast is a drama shot in 2007 and directed by Hesham Issawi. It illustrates the situation of Arabs living in America after the 9/11 tragedy. Mustafa (Sayed Badreya) is a widowed immigrant from Egypt who is the owner of Habibe's Cafe in Los Angeles, a place often visited by americans with Arab ethnic background. According to family and tribal tradition, he is the protector of his unmarried sister Salwah (Sarah Shahi), and is required to find her a suitable husband. Although he was raised in a conservative muslim manner, he is reshaping his beliefs when he decides to open a restaurant with a partner that is Jewish. His religious values will soon face another challenge when he finds out that his sister is attracted to a non-muslim American, Dr. John Westerman (Tim Guinee), a young and charming man. The film vividly shows the hardships encountered by ethnic Arabs when trying to adapt to the liberal democracy of the American society.
