2001
Rating:
PG-13
America's Sweethearts is a star-studded 2001 romantic comedy, written by Billy Crystal and starring Julia Roberts, Billy Crystal, Catherine Zeta-Jones, John Cusack, Hank Azaria, Stanley Tucci, Christopher Walken, Alan Arkin, Seth Green, and Rainn Wilson. Gwen Harrison (Zeta-Jones) and Eddie Thomas (Cusack) play a Hollywood couple who have recently split up following tensions arising from their latest film together. Crystal plays Lee Phillips, a publicist responsible for the couple's new film, and as the high-profile divorce threatens to destroy the film's chances at a big opening weekend, Phillips pulls out all the stops to keep them together long enough to release a successful film. Phillips' job isn't an easy one. Gwen has her heart set on the divorce, as does her new boyfriend Hector (Azaria). And Eddie is recovering from a nervous breakdown, only to find he really has feelings for Gwen's sister and assistant, Kiki (Roberts). America's Sweethearts is a fun look at the struggles of couples whose romances are tied up with their celebrity status.moreless

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

As enjoyable as this film is in parts, it's not nearly as successful as a whole. Enormously engaging in its opening segments, it's unable to sustain that good feeling over the long...

Like a bottle of lukewarm Champagne -- an expensive one, judging by the label -- America's Sweethearts opens with a promising burst of effervescence and quickly goes flat.

    Variety Robert Koehler

Begins as a smartly promising, gently farcical comedy of manners and ends as sourly and haphazardly as the lives it is poking fun at.
