An American Affair is a 2009 independent drama directed by William Olsson and written by Alex Metcalf. The film is set in the fall of 1963 in a suburban Washington, D.C., neighborhood. The story follows 13-year-old junior high student, Adam Stafford (Cameron Bright), in a coming-of-age story. Adam is an only child who goes to Catholic school and feels ignored by his old-fashioned parents and rejected by every girl he meets in school. When a sexy 30ish woman, Catherine Caswell (Gretchen Mol), moves in next door, Adam is very interested in her. Catherine who works as a painter seems very mysterious to Adam. In order to learn more about her, Adam goes to extreme measures that include steam-opening her mail, hiding in her closet and reading her personal diary, to learn everything he can. Catherine does not notice Adam spying, but she has secrets of her own: Catherine has a relationship with the CIA and they've taken of Adam.

Like many aspects of An American Affair, the music and the lopsided dramatic priorities take the viewer right out of the movie.
