An American in Paris is a 1951 musical inspired by the 1928 orchestral composition of George Gershwin and directed by Vincente Minelli. The film set in Paris, France, focuses on Jerry Mulligan (Gene Kelly) and the two women he meets who change his life forever. Jerry is a WWII veteran who moves to Paris so he can concentrate on painting. He meets a lonely, wealthy woman, Milo Roberts (Nina Foch), who takes him in to her home. Oblivious to Milo's real intentions, Jerry thinks Milo is helping him because she likes his work, but she is actually much more interested in Jerry than he thinks. Instead Jerry falls in love with a French ballerina, Lise (Leslie Caron). Lise returns Jerry's feelings, but she is set to be married to Henri (Georges Guetary). Lise cannot bring herself to break off the engagement because she feels indebted to Henri for his heroic acts that saved her family. Will Jerry find love and a successful career in Paris?
