Anchoress is a religious and philosophical drama that profoundly probes the conflict between human instinct and scriptural doctrine. Young Christine Carpenter (Natalie Morse) spends inordinate amounts of time admiring the statue of Virgin Mary at her medieval town's church and in the process garners the attentions of the town's lustful priest (Christopher Eccleston). He sees to it that Christine becomes the town's anchoress, or a religious hermit living in walled seclusion tasked with praying for the blessing of the villagers. The anchoretic lifestyle was widespread throughout the high Middle Ages in England, and its practiticners were traditionally confined to small walled in cells next to the church, devoting the entirety of their waking moments to religious contemplation and prayer. The experience transforms Christine's beliefs and spirituality when her burgeoning womanhood clashes and contrasts with the tenants of the clergy. Based on manuscripts and letters written in the 1300's, this historical drama was an Official Selection at the Sundance Film Festival and a Premiere Selection at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.moreless
