Angels and Insects is a 1995 drama starring Mark Rylance and based on the novella Morpho Eugenia by A.S. Byatt. Rylance plays William Adamson, a natural scientist on his way home to Victorian-era England. Adamson has spent several years living along the Amazon River, where he studied the large variety of animals there, particularly the insects. Adamson survives a shipwreck on the long journey home. He arrives in England with no money and no possessions, forced so start his life from scratch. He finds work at the estate of Sir Harald Alabaster (Jeremy Kemp), an amateur natural scientist who hires Adamson to catalog his insect collection. While working at the estate, Adamson meets and falls in love with Sir Harald's beautiful daughter. The two quickly begin a passionate relationship, but as they begin their new lives together Adamson develops an attraction to one of the estate's servants, Matty (Kristin Scott Thomas). He has to curb his desire for the young maid or risk losing his marriage, and his beautiful bride has a secret of her own, too. Angels and Insects is a steamy story about forbidden lovers, and it received one Academy Award nomination in 1997 for Best Costume Design.moreless
