Angle of Inspiration is a documentary about the artist Santiago Calatrava, the $23 million dollar grant he received to create The Sundial Bridge, and the resulting praise and contempt for the artist and the structure. Calatrava is a Spanish sculptor, architect and structural engineer, influenced by Spanish modernist engineering including the works of Antonio Gaudi. In the 1990s the city of Redding, California budgeted $3 million for a pedestrian bridge to cross the Sacramento river. Calatrava's design was chosen in 1996 and immediately became controversial especially for the projected cost of $23 million. The design was supported by a group of professionals and everyone in Redding had an opinion to share. The bridge is like no other in world. It's a sundial, it's built with a cantilever tower at one end securing cables, and it's specially lit at night so it emits an aquamarine glow. Interesting side note, Calatrava is the designer for The World Trade Center Transportation Hub, at the rebuilt World Trade Center in New York City.moreless
