When first time felon Ron Decker (Edward Furlong; American History X, T2: Judgement Day) is sentenced to two years in a decaying prison, he is quickly introduced to a world where violence is the only way of life. After witnessing a riot, Ron is soon taken under the wing of Earl Copen (Willem Dafoe; Platoon, The English Patient ), a veteran convict who has manipulated the system to his every advantage, earning the respect of the toughest cons and the favor of the crooked guards. But sometimes even respect in a community of convicts can hold you prisoner. Now, Ron will soon discover that life in the Animal Factory is not about rehabilitation, it's about survival.

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Gene Seymour

One of the least sensationalistic--and therefore, more unsettlingly plausible--visions of prison life ever transfigured into big-screen drama.

  • 70

The New York Times A.O. Scott

Willem Dafoe steals the picture with his comic timing.

  • 70

    Variety

In one of his best leading screen turns, Dafoe makes a potentially unlikely construct into a fascinating, full-blooded figure.
