Anita & Me is a 2002 British comedic drama written by Meera Syal and directed by Metin H''seyin. The film chronicles the life of twelve-year-old Meena Kumar (Candeep Uppal) who lives in the small mining town of Tollington in the West Midlands. While Meena is growing up in a conservative Indian family, she longs to be a part of the popular crowd. When Anita Rutter (Anna Brewster), a beautiful blond from a dysfunctional family, arrives in town, a world of opportunity opens up for Meena. Suddenly, Meena begins to drifts away from her conservative upbringing and embrace the culture of the Rutter family. With the added pressure of eccentric relatives, a baby brother on the way, grammar school entrance exams and the onset of teenage hormones, Meena struggles to find herself. In the end, Anita must reconcile the feelings of loyalty that she has for her family with the world just outside her doorstep.
