Anna Christie is a 1930 drama directed by Clarence Brown and based on a play by Eugene O'Neill. The movie is also Greta Garbo's first sound film. Anna Christie (Greta Garbo), a beautiful young woman, meets up with her estranged father, Chris Christofferson (George Marion). They board a coal barge together, hoping to get to know each other better during the journey. When the crew spots a group of men floundering in wreckage, the coal barge winds up accepting five survivors from a boat wreck, including Matt (Charles Bickford). Anna and Matt initially fight with each other, finding that their personalities clash. However, as the days pass, the passion of their anger slowly transforms into affection. Chris is reluctant to watch his daughter fall for a sailor, fearing that he will lose his daughter too soon after meeting her. When Matt and Chris fight, Anna steps in with stories of her shocking past, meaning that each person must reevulate his or her feelings and make difficult choices.moreless
