Antigone is the 1961 film dramatization of the Sophocles tragedy play. It is a sequel to Oedipus Rex and tells the story of his daughter Antigone. Eteocles and Polynices, Oedipus's two sons had agreed to reign jointly in Thebes, with one ruling the even years and the other ruling the odd years. When Eteocles refuses to step aside at the end of his one year reign, war breaks out and the brothers kill each other. Creon (Manos Katrakis), now ruler of Thebes, decrees that because Polynices attacked the regent who was currently in power, he is guilty of treason and cannot have an honorable burial, but should instead be left on the battlefield as food for the vultures. Antigone (Irene Papas), who is betrothed to Creon's son Haemon (Nikos Kazis), goes to the battlefield to bury her brother's body in spite of Creon's ruling. When caught, Creon's reaction will put not only Antigone's future, but the whole future of Thebes in jeopardy.moreless
