Antonia’s Line is a dramatic comedy directed by Marleen Gorris that follows the life and legacy of an independent and intelligent Antonia (Willeke van Ammelrooy) after she resettles back into her hometown village with her artistic and equally strong-willed daughter, Danielle (Els Dottermans). While her Dutch village is a relatively quiet place to live, it is filled with eccentric neighbors that easily match Antonia’s gumption. The local café was run by the redheaded Russian Olga (Fran Waller Zeper), who split her time between being a bartender with fulfilling her role as both undertaker and midwife. Mad Madonna (Catherine ten Bruggencate), a Catholic, heralded every full moon with howls as her Protestant love yelled at her from the apartment below. And, there is Crooked Finger (Mil Seghers), an agoraphobic nihilist, who ultimately becomes the tutor and father figure to not only Danielle but also her genius daughter, Therese (Veerle van Overloop). Eccentric, passionate, and humorous, Antonia’s Line follows each challenge the matriarch faces as she gathers a new style of family with each passing season with the unusual inhabitants in this beautiful Dutch countryside.moreless
