Movie Summary

Director:
Wayne Wang
Released:
1999
Rating:
PG-13
Anywhere but Here takes a slightly different look at the mother-and-daughter relationship. Ann August (Natalie Portman) and her mother Adele (Susan Sarandon) are trying to find their place in the world. Adele is convinced that her daughter will be the next big movie star, and continues to push Ann in that direction, moving them from their small town in Wisconsin to Beverly Hills. Ann is well aware that her mother is not only trying to give her the good life, but also trying to live vicariously through her. Her mother's chaotic, crazy way of life is completely against Ann's sensible plans of going to college instead of Hollywood. Adele spends most of her life obsessing over men not interested in her, retreating for days in her bedroom, and checking out of being a parent. Adele constantly fails over and over again in not only parenting her daughter, but understanding what she actually wants out of life. After failed attempts and mishaps, Adele finally tries to help Ann in finding her way, and they in turn find each other.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    The New York Times

Wang once again works splendidly with actresses, and boy, does he have a lot to work with this time.

  • 50

    Variety Emanuel Levy

With half a dozen roles to her credit, Portman is a natural performer who brings rough edges to any role she plays -- the movie is inconceivable without her.

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

While adapting accomplished fiction such as this is a lure Hollywood can never resist, some characters breathe better on the page, and that is the case here.
