Anzio is a classic war film based on a novel of the same name detailing the events of the 1944 Allied Operation Shingle. The gears up as war correspondent Dick Ennis (Robert Mitchum, Night of the Hunter, El Dorado) is assigned to accompany US Army Rangers to cover the upcoming attempt to outflank the formidable enemy defenses. The amphibious landing is unopposed, but the American general Ennis met with at the outset (Arthur Kennedy, Lawrence of Arabia, Fantastic Voyage) is too cautious, preferring to fortify his beachhead before advancing inland. Ennis and Ranger Rabinoff (Peter Falk, Columbo) drive in by jeep through the countryside, discovering there are few Germans between the beachhead and Rome, but this information is ignored. As a result, the German commander, Kesselring (Wolfgang Preiss, The Longest Day, Von Ryan's Express), has time to gather his forces and launch an effective counterattack. This rousing action classic was directed by journeyman adventure helmer Edward Dmytryk (Warlock, Raintree Country) and released in 1968 by Columbia Pictures.
