Apocalypto is a 2006 Mel Gibson film about the perilous life of a Mesoamerican tribesman during the decline of the Mayan Civilization. The film follows Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood) and his fight to evade capture and human sacrifice to save his family from sure death. During a hunt in the Amazon forest, his tribesman are ambushed by raiders led by Zero Wolf (Raoul Trujillo). The raiders kill and capture many of the tribe including Jaguar Paw. Jaguar Paw is taken to a Mayan city where he awaits sacrifice to the Gods. Driven by his love for his family, he escapes his capture and flees into the jungle. Zero Wolf leads a hunting party after him Ð no one has ever escaped his deadly grasps. One-by-one, Jaguar Paw kills off the hunting party getting closer to being reunited with his family. But when the chase forces Jaguar Paw out onto the beaches of Mexico, we find great ships coming towards the shore. This stops everyone in their tracks. For the first time we see the beginning of the end for the Maya. The story of Apocalypto shows the conflict of one man in a world within the world.moreless
