Aquamarine is a 2006 teen comedy by director Elizabeth Allen, starring Emma Roberts, Joanna ‘JoJo’ Levesque, Sara Paxton, and Jake McDorman. Claire (Emma Roberts) and Hailey Rogers (Joanna ‘JoJo’ Levesque) are best friends who discover a big secret in their pool after a wild storm—a girl-sized secret with long blond hair and a fish tail. Aquamarine (Sara Paxton) is a mermaid who wishes to be a human and, as long as she remains dry, can have legs. She must find true love, and true love’s first kiss, quickly, however, or her father will order her back to live in the sea forever. Claire and Hailey agree to help her, because she promises to grant them a wish if they help her and, since Hailey will soon have to leave, the girls want to wish that the move is canceled and they are not separated. But this is a big secret for two teenage girls to keep and finding true love is not as easy as it sounds. Aquamarine won a 2007 Young Artist Award and was nominated for two additional 2007 Young Artist Awards, as well as two 2006 Teen Choice Awards.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Variety Joe Leydon

Result is an unusually likeable family-friendly comedy.

  • 60

    The New York Times

Ms. Paxton isn't quite as magnetic as a movie mermaid ought to be, but the two buddies are a treat to watch, especially Ms. Roberts, showing the genes of her Aunt Julia.

  • 50

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

The movie is awfully sweet. The young actresses playing eighth-graders look their age, for once, and have an unstudied charm.
