Army of Shadows is a 1969 French and Italian film directed by Jean-Pierre Melville and starring Lino Ventura, Paul Meurisse, Simone Signoret, and Jean-Pierre Cassel. The story takes place in 1942 when the Nazi's occupied France. Philippe Gerbier (Venutra) is a civil engineer working as one of the French resistance's chiefs. When his identity is revealed, he is interned at a Nazi camp but is able to escape. When he returns to Marseilles, he makes sure that the traitor is executed. He then rejoins the Resistance and becomes of the most respected members of the underground movement. The film carefully details the everyday struggle of the members of the Resistance as they attempted to save lives and return France to its former glory. The film was not originally released in the United States due to French bias against the film, however when it was finally released almost 40 years after production the film was one of the most critically successful films of 2006.moreless
